Indiecan Entertainment to release the official theatrical version of the documentary BRUCE COCKBURN: PACING THE CAGE with North American tour to launch May 24th in Toronto and Saskatoon.

Toronto- Following on it’s rousing World premiere at the Whistler Film Festival, The long awaited theatrical version of the moving documentary BRUCE COCKBURN: PACING THE CAGE, kicks off a North American theatrical release tour in Toronto and Saskatoon, beginning May 24th.

The film, directed by veteran helmer Joel Goldberg and co-produced with legendary Canadian music manager/producer Bernie Finkelstein, finds the iconic and outspoken Cockburn at his most introspective, reflecting on his career, activism and deep spirituality.

“I’m a lifelong Bruce Cockburn fan who always thought that Bruce never got the credit he deserved as an artist and an activist. I met with Bernie Finkelstein and pitched the idea of a movie that would explore different aspects of Bruce’s life through his eyes. A Canadian Icon looking back at a career that is still moving forward. Bernie liked the idea and he told me that my timing might be good, that Bruce might be interested in doing a project like that now. Lucky for us, Bruce was interested and agreed to participate. So filming began, and “Pacing the Cage” was born where Bruce is most comfortable, on the road on his “Slice O’ Life” tour.” says Goldberg.

Featuring sizzling live musical performances from his 2009 North American tour, plus, interviews with artists, fans and friends like Jackson Browne, Colin Linden, Bono, Michael Ondaatje, Sarah Harmer, etc.

“I am very excited that Indiecan will be releasing BRUCE COCKBURN PACING THE CAGE. I have always been a huge Bruce Cockburn fan and now I am a huge Bernie Finkelstein and Joel Goldberg fan! I saw the film at The Whistler Film Festival in December and met with Bernie and Joel then. I told them at that time that I had to be the one to get this film out to audiences across North America,” said Indiecan Entertainment’s Avi Federgreen.

BRUCE COCKBURN: PACING THE CAGE is a must for any music fans, whether acquainted with the charismatic superstar, or discovering him for the first time.

As an added bonus, Director/producer Joel Goldberg and Co-producer Bernie Finkelstein will host Q and A’s following 7:00 p.m. screenings in Toronto May 24th and 25th at Carlton Cinemas.

Bruce Cockburn donates archives to McMaster
    - Collection is a window into the creativity of a celebrated songwriter

HAMILTON, ON. May 7, 2013 — Bruce Cockburn, one of Canada’s best loved
musicians and composers, has donated his archives to McMaster, including his
notebooks, musical arrangements, gold records, letters, scrapbooks, nearly 1,000
    recordings, and even three guitars.

“These are my tools, my rough drafts, my mementoes and my trophies. Together, they
form the roadmap of my working life,” says Cockburn. “I’m pleased they will have a safe
and permanent home in a place where they may be useful to others.”

The collection includes 32 of Cockburn’s notebooks from 1969 to 2002. Through their
pages, one can trace the development of individual songs, sometimes from single
thoughts to finished lyrics, all set randomly among pages of sketches, observations,
budgets, set lists and other notes. The notebooks offer a real window into the artist
and activist’s imagination, creative process and his life as a working musician rising to
    international prominence.

Bruce Cockburn is an iconic and respected figure in Canadian and international
culture,” says McMaster Provost and Vice-President (Academic) David Wilkinson. “For
him to choose McMaster as the recipient of this collection, while he is still contributing to
our culture, is a true honour. We are grateful for his gift, which will impact generations of
students and other researchers across multiple disciplines, including those involved with
    McMaster’s highly regarded music program.

Among the papers Cockburn has donated is correspondence from notable figures such
as Adrienne Clarkson, Lloyd Axworthy, David Suzuki, Vanessa Redgrave, Anne Murray
and John Crosbie. There are fan letters, photos and more in a collection that requires
64 pages just to list all the items that will be available to researchers at McMaster’s
William Ready Division of Archives and Research Collections.

We are delighted to receive such a rich resource that will benefit students, faculty
members and other researchers studying not only music and poetry, but social activism,
politics and the creative process itself,” says McMaster’s acting University Librarian Vivian Lewis.

Cockburn was the recipient of an honorary doctorate from McMaster in 2009.

The university’s archives also include personal collections from such notable thinkers
and artists as philosopher Bertrand Russell, authors Pierre Berton, Margaret Laurence
    and Farley Mowat.

McMaster University, one of four Canadian universities listed among the Top 100
universities in the world, is renowned for its innovation in both learning and discovery. It
has a student population of 23,000, and more than 160,000 alumni in 140 countries.

One of the most prolific singer-songwriters to emerge from the 1960s, Bruce Cockburn is also one of the most eclectic, very likely the most honest, and certainly the most overlooked. His steady output—be it reggae, jazz, rock, blues, folk or country—never dissolved into the solipsism that plagues breakout success. Instead, Cockburn sang about injustice and condemned imperialism, without sounding sanctimonious. And while other contemporaries had moved south to the United States to advance their fledgling careers, Cockburn always remained committed to being a Canadian artist. His faithfulness was rewarded when he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2002.
Upon the release of his 31st studio album, Small Source of Comfort, PopMatters had the opportunity to talk with him about his new record, his career, and even Justin Bieber.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Canadian Music Hall of Famer Bruce Cockburn gets stamped

(OTTAWA) – Canada Post today announced the addition of Canadian music icon Bruce Cockburn to the Canadian Recording Artists stamp series. He joins four more outstanding Canadian singer-songwriters, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Robbie Robertson and Ginette Reno for the third instalment of the very popular series.

The four Canadian Recording Artists stamps will be issued on June 30, 2011.

Bruce Cockburn was born in 1945 in Ottawa. In his 1964 high school yearbook Bruce stated his desire simply: “hopes to become a musician.” And the rest as they say is history.

Cockburn has recorded 31 albums including 20 gold and platinum. He has received 13 Juno awards and in recognition of his lifelong contributions to Canadian music, culture and social activism, he has been awarded seven honorary doctorates. He received the Order of Canada in 1983, and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame in 2002.

“We’re proud to be able to add one more honour to Bruce Cockburn’s achievements,” said Jim Phillips, Director of Stamp Marketing for Canada Post. “We hope that he will continue to make music and make change for a very long time to come.”

“This is very exciting,” said Cockburn. “I think the design is beautiful and I’m deeply honoured that Canada Post has seen fit to include me in their Canadian Recording Artists stamp series.”

Winnipeg designer Circle Design Inc. showcases an image of Cockburn on a CD-shaped booklet. The stamp features a monochromatic photo of the recording artist alongside his Order of Canada insignia. Fans will notice that many of their most well-known song lyrics appear in the background of the booklet cover.

Bruce Cockburn is currently on tour in the United States promoting his 31st album, Small Source of Comfort.
